Since the Italian Pantry's inception, John Serra and Matteo Rao have had one mandate, "Everyone should be able to afford and cook high quality food for their family and friends".
The family run business has been providing Tasmania with the best provincial Italian food, regional wines and beers along with aperitif spirits since 2006. The business has grown and flourished and developed in-house pasta manufacture, restaurant and cooking school, as well as the wholesale division that services restaurants throughout Tasmania.
Our humble Trattoria has recently been awarded this Italian Hospitality Seal meaning that the Italian Pantry has been quality assessed and approved to be an officially endorsed Italian eating establishment outside of Italy using DOP, DOC and IGT products.
Outside Italy, in Australia there are only 65 establishments that qualify for and have been approved to use the seal. The Italian Pantry is the only Tasmanian on the listing. This is great news for all Tasmanians as Italy just got closer, you now only need to travel to Federal Street in North Hobart for a genuine Italian dining experience.
For more than 5 years the cooking school has been in planning and it has finally come to fruition. The Cooking School is a great learning place so that everyone young and old can experience a little bit of Italy at home. Cooking Italian is fun and fulfilling, come and learn how to create your own Italian table from the Italian pantry.
At the Italian Pantry the dining experience is akin to an Italian Trattoria. It is an Italian-style eating establishment, less formal than a ristorante, but more formal than an osteria. The food is modest but plentiful (mostly following regional, local and family recipes) in some instances dinner is even served family-style (at common tables).
The retail outlet is known to be the place to find scores of Italian products that have just reached Australia because of the Italian Pantry's provedore and wholesale business. Where else could you find air freighted cheese and wood fired pizza bases direct from Italy.
